The deadline for raising the necessary funds to acquire the reknown Royal Gorge property on Donner Summit is quickly approaching - December 20, 2012.
The Truckee Donner Land Trust and the Trust for Public Land, with the help of the Northern Sierra Partnership, agreed to acquire 2,829 acres of Royal Gorge in an effort to supervise the expansion of the recreation opportunities of the area. Included in the 2,829 acre purchase is the Royal Gorge Nordic Center, Van Norden Meadow and 355 acres in Negro Canyon over Donner Lake.
Optimism is high that the goal of $13.5 million (the funds necessary for the purchase) will be achieved; however, the need continues for additional funds to cover forestry management, stewardship, trails and meadow restoration.
