Incline Village History

The small quiet community at Lake Tahoe’s North Shore is a fairly new community rich with history.  The Washoe and Paiute Indians were the first residents at Lake Tahoe’s shores.  As time passed, settlers began moving west and often times pausing at the passes to marvel at the Lake’s color and clarity before moving onward and settling small communities. While South Lake Tahoe was booming, Incline Village was not. Things changed for Incline Village in the mid-1800’s when lumber was needed for the mines and Incline Village was an excellent source of lumber for the mines in Washoe Valley and Virginia City.

The naming of Incline Village came from the mining days when the logs were carried the logs vertically nearly 1400 feet to the V flume. In 1884, the small settlement of Incline Village was declared as both and election precinct and a fourth class post office, putting the small town on the map! By 1897, Incline was left in rubble. Stumps, crumbling flumes and rotting log chutes were left to rot, leaving the area to rebuild the cut forests.

Not until the 1930’s, when summer homes were built in the area, did people begin traveling the one lane road to Incline Village.  Around this time, the lumber business had moved out of the area and Captain George Whittell bought the land and built his stone castle on the shores near Sand Harbor, which can be seen from the road today. In the 1950’s, the Crystal Bay Development Company approached Captain Whittell offering to purchase the 9,000 acres to build a planned community. In the 1960’s, construction began in Incline Village. Roads were built, a ski area was designed, beaches were developed, and a golf course was being planned in the small community. Building boomed in the area and custom homes and condominiums were being built along Lakeshore Boulevard.  In an effort to keep the history of the early logging days, Crystal Bay Development officially named this new community “Incline Village”. In the late 1960’s, a high school was built and the community was on its way.  In 1976, Incline Village became a year- round community and residents began to wonder about the future of the community.

Today, Incline Village is a healthy community with signs of a healthy future.  Although the people who live in Incline come from all areas of the world with different career backgrounds, they have one thing in common, a love for Incline Village and Lake Tahoe.
